| 2021년, 나는 태평염전에서 주최하는 입주 작가 프로그램에 선정되어 3개월(9월~11월) 동안 전라남도 신안의 작은 섬, 증도에서 생활하고 작업했다. 서해안에 위치한 그곳에서는 하루에 두 차례씩 밀물과 썰물을 볼 수 있었는데, 일정 시간마다 바닷물로 꽉 찼던 곳이 바닥의 지형을 드러내었고, 또 어느 새엔 그 바닥이 바닷물로 꽉 찼다. 그 현상의 원인은 지구 밖 저 멀리에 있는 달의 힘이라는데, 도저히 믿기지 않았지만 눈앞에서 목격한 그 모습은 지구를 끌어당기는 달의 힘을 가히 실감케 했다. 지구와 달의 '밀당(밀고 당기기)'을 이해하기 위해서는 나의 생각과 시야를 지구 밖, 우주로 확장해야만 했다. 그 경험을 바탕으로 달을 그려보았다. |

| "Two enormous circles" The sunrises and sunsets in Jeungdo Island are far more dramatic than those seen in the city. When a magnificent scene unfolds by the light of the sun, it makes you wonder how grand a day is. Furthermore, the high and low tide, which can be seen twice a day, make you realize the power of the moon that attracts the Earth. To understand the “push and pull” of this Earth and the moon, we need to expand our thoughts and perspectives beyond the Earth and into space. The sun and the moon, two giant circles appear alternately to make a day. With each passing day, the seawater becomes salt, and we each become ourselves. |
