| 태평염전의 아티스트 레지던시 프로그램에 선정되어 3개월간 전라남도 증도에서 생활하고 작업했다. 그 기간 동안 염전에서 소금이 채취되는 과정을 지켜보았고, 섬에서만 누릴 수 있는 환경을 체험하며 조금씩 작품의 윤곽을 잡아갔다. I lived and worked in Jeungdo, Shinan for three months as a selected artist for the Taepyeong Salt Farm's Artist Residency Program. During my stay, I observed the process of collecting salt from the salt farm and gradually outlined my work by experiencing the island life. |

| "무언가가 된다는 것은 무엇일까?" 증도에 와서 배워보니, 바닷물이 소금이 되는 과정은 단순했다. 정수한 바닷물을 염전이라는 평평한 바닥에 야트막이 들이고 그대로 두면, 태양열과 바람에 의해 바닷물이 증발되면서 작은 결정체가 남는다. 그것이 소금이다. 다시 말해, 바닷물은 태양과 바람에 의해 소금이 된다. 아름다우리만치 단순한 이 원리에서, 나는 '우리가 우리 됨’에 대하여 생각해 보았다. 태어나듯 흘러가듯 무르익듯 소멸하듯. . . 그렇게 되어가는 어떤 원리에 대해 표현하고 싶었다. |

| "What does it mean to be something?" What I learned from coming here is that the process of turning seawater into salt was quite simple. When purified seawater is placed on a flat floor of a salt farm and left as it is, the seawater is evaporated by the solar heat and wind, leaving tiny crystals. Those crystals are what we know as salt. In other words, seawater becomes salt by the sun and wind. In this beautifully simple principle, I thought about 'becoming ourselves'. Same as being born, like the passing of time, like being ripe for something, like dying. I wanted to express a specific principle of becoming someone we are. |

| "있기도 하고 없기도 한 길, 노둣길" ‘노둣길’은 오래전에 섬사람들이 섬과 섬 또는 육지와의 연결을 위해 돌을 쌓아 만든 길이라고 한다. 지금은 도로화가 되었지만 여전히 높이가 낮기 때문에 밀물 때는 물에 잠기고, 썰물 때는 모습이 드러나 이때에만 길을 건널 수 있다. 급변하는 현대화 시대에 아직도 이런 길이 존재한다는 것이 신기하기도 했고, 자연의 순리를 따른다는 면에서는 뭔가 숙연해지기까지 했다. 이러한 노둣길의 존재는 내게 강한 인상을 남겼다. 나는 작품을 불연속적으로 이어진 길처럼 만들어 노둣길을 조금이라도 형상화해보고 싶었다. |
